Autumnal Votives October 23, 2011

Candle holders

Candle holder

Who doesn’t love the beautiful colours of deciduous leaves in the autumn? Tie them round glass candle holders, pop a tea light in the bottom and watch the colours glow.

I decided to give it a go with these three votives that I already had. They are differing shades of blue, but clear ones would work much better.

I simply held the leaves in place and tied a brown ribbon round them, but you could also use a rubber band to secure them and tie ribbon on top to hide the band.

An Engaging Birthday October 18, 2011

Last Thursday was my birthday. My boyfriend and I had the Thursday and Friday booked off work because he had a surprise planned for the Thursday and on Friday we were going to Cornwall for a long weekend. I found out on Tuesday evening that the surprise was a trip in a hot air balloon which I was crazily excited about because it is the one thing I’ve always wanted to do. Jon however was keen to point out that we might not be able to go because it is so weather-dependent. The back-up plan was to go to Weston-Super-Mare to visit the Seaquarium.

On Wednesday evening we had to phone the hotline to check whether or not our flight was due to go ahead. The weather forecast looked good so we were hopeful. There was a message from our pilot to say that there was due to be fog early in the morning but that it was supposed to clear up so instead of meeting at 8am he asked us to meet at 9.30.

We got up at 8am on Thursday, looked out of the window, and saw that it was the foggiest we had ever seen Bath! By the time we left the house, just before 9.00, it was only slightly better. We decided (with our infinite knowledge on such things) that there was about a 50-50 chance that the flight would go ahead.

Fog over Bath

The view at 8am. For a comparison of what it usually looks like: https://alison13w.wordpress.com/2011/08/19/so-i-live-in-bath-now/

We met the pilot at Victoria Park in central Bath at about 9.20 and he told us that although there was still quite foggy it was clearing up fairly quickly and that he’d wait for everyone to arrive before giving us the low-down. Blue skies were starting to break through overhead which was promising. Ten minutes later he called us all together to say that he was going to take a drive up to the top of Lansdown Hill where he could get a better view of the situation. He also said that he’d give it a cut off point of 10am as he didn’t want to be wasting our whole morning waiting.

When he came back he said that there was no visibility at the top of the hill and also that the fog was still bad to the south-west which was where the wind would have taken us. Bristol airport is also in that direction and he had spoken to them and they’d advised him against it so he called it off.

Nevermind though, we will re-book it for spring (the hot air balloon season doesn’t run over the winter) and it’ll be something to look forward to. He also gave us a voucher for a free photo when we do get to go, taken with his balloon-mounted camera, which I thought was jolly nice of him given that it wasn’t his fault there was too much fog! He showed us an example picture and it looks really cool, it takes a photo of everyone in the basket with the countryside laid out behind you.

So, to the train station we went and off to the seaside! We got to Weston late morning and had fish and chips at the end of the pier. We then walked along the beach and visited the Seaquarium which was fun as we could get all excited about all the cool fish we’ll see in January when we go to the Caribbean! And we had the place almost to ourselves!

Big wheel

The Big Wheel

We then started to head home to get ready for our trip to Cornwall the next day, but before we left we decided to go on the big wheel for some views over the seafront. We have a small plush hippo which travels with us and has his photo taken in various locations, so when Jon suggested getting Harumphrey out of the bag to take his photo I didn’t bat an eyelid. But when I looked closer I saw that the hippo had a diamond ring on its arm and then Jon dropped to one knee and asked me to marry him! I knew it was coming at some point but I was still shocked! Of course I said yes or I doubt I would be telling you this story…

We were both so excited and happy that we decided not to go home straight away; instead we walked along the beach a bit more, took lots more photos and generally enjoyed calling each other fiancé(e)!

We then had a wonderful weekend away in Cornwall, and were incredibly lucky with the weather as you can see in the photos below.

I am tagging this post in this week’s Photo Challenge as the theme is possibility, and if an engagement doesn’t sum up that theme then what does?

Treasury Tuesday: Spooky October 11, 2011

Filed under: Uncategorized — Alison @ 5:51 pm

I enjoyed this Treasury theme more than I expected. There was quite a lot of unexpectedly fun Halloween stuff on Etsy. I love the little mice stickers, the potion bottles (especially Ghoul Drool!), and the wooden ghosts. My favourite has to be the maternity top though, how cool is that?!

The tree necklace is a bit like one I’ve made recently, which I will post later, when I get around to taking some pictures!

As always, visit little red buttons for more

Weekly Photo Challenge: Sunset October 6, 2011

I’ve decided to take up WordPress’ challenge of posting a photo once a week for the rest of 2011 based on a theme of their choosing. This week it’s sunsets and here is my offering of the sun going down over Bath. Let me know what you think. And check out The Daily Post for more info.

The Makery September 13, 2011

There are lots of lovely craft, art and fabric shops in Bath, many of them independents. The Makery have two shops which mostly sell fabric and sewing accessories, which isn’t really my thing, but I did buy these cute printed wooden buttons in there. I’m thinking I might use them to make the centre of a brooch.

Buttons

They also run a series of workshops and cater for all kinds of parties. I love the Baby Shower idea. You get a group of your friends and family together, everyone decorates a fabric square using applique, embroidery or beading, and they turn all the squares into a unique handmade quilt for your baby! How cute is that?

Rainbow September 7, 2011

Filed under: Uncategorized — Alison @ 2:50 pm

Yesterday we had some crazy weather; sheets of rain one minute and sunny blue skies the next. And then in the evening we had the most fantastic rainbow. It was huge, you could see the whole perfect arch, and the colours were distinct and bright. I tried to take some pictures, which didn’t quite capture its beauty, but here is one. Just imagine that it was 100 times better in real life.

Rainbow

I didn’t take part in Treasury Tuesday this week since the theme was “my best buys” and although I like to browse on Etsy I haven’t really bought much from there. So here is a rainbow themed treasury I put together instead.
